Cushion replacement for the furniture you keep

Cushion replacement can be worth discussing when the cover still looks good but the seat feels flat or uneven. At Skippy Upholstery in Brooklyn, we review the cushion, its cover and the furniture beneath it. More than 40 years of upholstery experience informs the conversation.

First, tell us what feels wrong: a compressed seat, an uneven surface or a cushion that no longer holds its shape. Then show us the whole piece and the loose cushions. Sometimes the filling needs attention; other problems involve the cover, seat support or frame.

For a full cover change, explore sofa and couch reupholstery or chair upholstery. Loose or damaged frames may need furniture repairs as well.

Foam, restuffing and a better fit

Foam replacement and restuffing are not the same job for every cushion. Construction, thickness, shape and the way the cover closes affect the options. We can discuss a firmer or softer feel, but the choice should suit both the cover and the way you sit.

A back cushion can need different filling from a seat cushion. Likewise, a curved bench pad needs a different fit from a rectangular sofa seat. Bring an existing cushion or clear measurements only after discussing the project with the shop.

For examples of fitted upholstery, see our sectional sofa project and window-seat upholstery. These are broader furniture projects, rather than cushion-only replacement case studies.

Featured project: cushions that follow a curve

This curved window-seat project shows why cushion replacement and restuffing begins with shape. Ribbed upholstery follows the seat around the bay, while separate fitted sections meet above the white cabinetry. A replacement cushion must suit the existing curve and leave storage doors usable. The photographs show the finished upholstery; they do not document a foam replacement.

What to send for a cushion assessment

Photograph the front and back of each cushion, the seams or zipper, and the furniture without the loose seat cushions if they lift off easily. Include the approximate width, depth and thickness, plus the number of pieces. Do not cut open a fixed cover to take measurements.

Also explain your preferred feel and what you like about the current seat. If the cover is torn, the zipper is damaged or the cushion has an unusual shape, mention that at the start. We can then discuss filling, cover repairs or a broader upholstery scope.

Plan your cushion replacement estimate

The price depends on filling, dimensions, shape, cover condition and the amount of fitting required. Reusing a sound cover may be an option, while a damaged one can need separate work. Confirm the proposed materials and finish before the project begins.

Send your photos through our estimate form. You can also read about materials and upholstery craftsmanship, or discuss built-in business seating through restaurant upholstery.

Cushion replacement starts with the whole seat

Questions about cushion replacement

Can I keep my existing cushion covers?
That depends on their condition, construction and fit. Show the seams, zipper and any wear so we can discuss whether new filling can work with the existing cover.

Can you make a cushion feel firmer?
Tell us what you want to change. We can discuss filling and fit, but frame and seat-support issues should also be considered if the whole seat feels uneven.

Before you begin

Do you work on bench cushions?
Share the bench shape, dimensions and photographs. Loose pads and fixed upholstered benches can require different work.

How much does cushion restuffing cost?
The number of cushions, their size, filling and cover condition affect the estimate. Send photos and measurements for a project-specific discussion.
